A Hive thermostat with app control for a home in Dundonald, Belfast
An old wireless thermostat and programmer meant this couple couldn't control their heating when they were out, and the schedule never got changed. We replaced it with a Hive thermostat they run from their phone, and they've since reworked their whole heating schedule to cut their gas use.

The problem: no control once they left the house
This couple’s combi boiler was run by an older wireless thermostat and programmer. It worked, but only if you were standing in front of it.
That mattered most when they went away. There was always a chance the heating would be left running the whole time they were on holiday, and no way to check or switch it off. Equally, there was no way to turn it on a few hours before they got home.
They also admitted the old programmer wasn’t easy to use. Because changing the schedule was awkward, they’d stopped adjusting it, and the heating was burning through a lot of gas as a result.
What we fitted
We replaced the old wireless thermostat with a Hive Thermostat, fitted the Hive receiver at the boiler and set up the Hive Hub, which connects to the home broadband router and is what makes control from the app possible. Then we set up the Hive app and tested the system to make sure the boiler was picking up the signal and responding properly.
Getting them set up
Before leaving, we went through the app with them: how to set the heating times, how to change the target temperature, and how to adjust things on the go.
The result
Everything worked first time. Because changing settings on the phone is so much quicker and easier than the old programmer, they went straight on to rework their whole heating schedule to cut down on gas.
They can now switch the heating off while they’re on holiday, and back on a few hours before they get home, from wherever they are.
