Room-by-room tado° heating for a family home in Castlereagh, Belfast

The problem: a warm living room and cold bedrooms

This family’s heating ran from a combi boiler, controlled by an old digital thermostat in the living room. The living room is the busiest room in the house, with the TV on, two adults, a baby and a dog, so it warms up faster than anywhere else.

That’s what caused the trouble. The living room reached its set temperature first, the thermostat switched the heating off, and the bedrooms upstairs were left cold.

They also wanted something the old thermostat couldn’t do at all: keep the baby’s nursery at a steady minimum temperature through the night, without heating the rest of the house to get there.

What we fitted

We replaced the old digital thermostat with a tado° Wired Smart Thermostat, and fitted tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats to the four radiators that mattered most to them: the kitchen, the bathroom, the main bedroom and the nursery.

With smart radiator thermostats, each of those rooms has its own temperature and its own schedule. The house is no longer run by a single thermostat in the warmest room.

Setting up the schedules

Once everything was fitted, we sat down with them and set up the schedules in the tado° app:

• Nursery: kept warm all night.
• Main bedroom, kitchen and bathroom: off overnight.
• Main bedroom: an hour of heat in the morning and an hour before bed, rather than all evening.
• Living room: its existing radiator valve was turned down slightly, so it takes very little heat on its own.

The result

The nursery now stays warm and comfortable through the night, and the family has stopped paying to heat rooms nobody is using. Heating the main bedroom only when they need it cuts their energy use further.

They’ve already noticed the difference: their gas is lasting longer than it did before the tado° install.
